April 18th, 2010 - To provide Street View style coverage of the Vancouver Winter Olympics, the engineers at Google fitted a still panoramic camera rig to a snowmobile so folks at home could experience the Olympic venues and Whistler-Blackcomb Mountain from the safety and comfort of their desk chairs.  Google could not have picked a more appropriate event to launch the “Slope View” version of Street View.  While a lot of people were not sure if this was a special project for the Winter Olympic Games, we have just found out that it was not.

jjjj_400

Google has now moved on to capturing and mapping all of Vail Resorts. As Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone are our stomping grounds here at SlopeViews, we are pleased to know they have chosen Vail Resorts as the launching pad for all the ski resorts in the United States.  We wish them good luck and are excited to see the projects when they are finally done.

Some may think this is direct competition with SlopeViews, but we view it as a compliment and a way to validate our vision.  People are becoming more and more used to the point and click still images of Street View and other mapping portals.  What we have been seeing emerge now is the use of full 360° video by companies trying to fill niche markets, especially in Europe.   While Google is doing a tremendous job, and with the future looking very bright for them, it does not make sense for them to map the world in full video.  These ripe markets will be filled with more specialized and targeted businesses.  So to sum this up, while Google is spearheading the new mapping era, expect to see additional “street level imagery”, especially in video from many different companies as the public gets more used to this concept and becomes increasingly demanding of new technologies.

March 26th, 2010 - On March 22nd we launched our much anticipated OnSnow™ ski resort trail maps. The maps allow resorts to showcase their ski runs, lifts, and base villages in 360° immersive video. Integrated with augmented reality, OnSnow™ provides the most immersive and engaging media to date. When keeping the current direction marketing is headed in mind, people are more and more demanding when a product is presented to them. A static picture or even a 360° panoramic will no longer do. Video can fail to strike a chord as well, not withstanding how professionally it might have been assembled, and how illustrative it stands. People are simply accustomed to demanding more these days and as a result, traditional media is becoming obsolete. OnSnow™ is a great way to not only show a prospective guest the premises where they will be staying, but to also provide forthcoming visitors with a good representation of the amenities offered at any park or resort.

"Resorts are always seeking that competitive edge to drive business and help prospective guests choose their destination. What better way than to show exactly what your resort offers and merge it with a booking system." says Sarah Allen of Powderhorn Resort.

OnSnow™ integrates 360° video with any trail map, village map, or building floorplan. In a double-paned window, users can see an interactive trail map in one pane, and synchronized 360° immersive video in the other. Ski runs, lifts, and select mountain features represent “video paths”. By clicking on any point of a “video path,” users are immediately taken to that location via 360° video. With a simple click and drag of a computer mouse, each user can control their point of view, and the entire resort experience is suddenly available for exploration. The experience is completely immersive, allowing the viewer to look around in any direction while the video is playing, or pause and zoom in on an area of interest.

Vail Resorts is one of the first to adopt interactive video for its resort websites. “The immersive technology allows us to provide our website visitors with the true experience of each mountain resort, before they actually arrive. As a result, skiers and riders can have a one-of-a-kind viewing experience each time and can truly preview an area that they’ve never seen. We employ a lot of video on our sites, and feel as if these videos allow us to go one step further in bringing the experience of the great outdoors to life.” says Charles Townsend of the Vail Resorts Interactive Marketing Team.

We are extremely excited to bring our full-motion interactive video maps to the travel industry. OnSnow™ can give resorts a competitive edge and drive purchase intent by helping prospective guests feel more comfortable in choosing their destination. A conventional 2D video can be more illustrative in its own right; however, with immersive video the user has full control over what is being displayed making it all feel more personalized, and people ultimately love that. We have seen the success of 360° street-level imagery from online mapping and travel portals and adding the element of motion capture to 360° imagery is the next step. The key advantages with OnSnow™ are immediately noticed. OnSnow™ is alive with 360° video, allowing viewers to take a run, ride the lifts, and experience many of the amenities offered without leaving the comfort of their home or office. This is a true virtual tour with complete interactivity.

February 03rd, 2010 - All of us at SlopeViews are proud to say that the 2010 SIA Snow Show was a hit!  After its debut in Denver everyone was impressed to say the least.  The Denver Convention Center was an amazing venue and the energy during the show was unparalleled.  We conducted numerous interviews and really got a feel for the pulse of the show.  The feelings were the same across the board: the move to Denver was the right thing to do!  Everyone was pumped to be in ski country and ready to get down to business. The real treat was when the Snow Show moved to Winter Park and Devils Thumb Ranch for the On-Snow Demo Days.  This gave everyone the chance to test out the gear on display at the Denver Convention Center after four days of “strictly business” and do what we all love best-to play in the snow!  For SlopeViews, it was an amazing show that will always be remembered.  We launched the next generation of trail maps for the ski industry which created a tremendous amount of buzz.  The immersive trail maps allow people to virtually tour the resort from the warmth and comfort of their home.  From riding the lifts to skiing the runs, the maps offer the closest experience anyone can get to actually being at the ski resort.  The immersive trail maps were a hit as well as our unique video platform.  We want to thank SIA for all their hard work in making the show happen and Mary Cecile Neville in particular for her support of our vision.  We also want to thank everyone who came out to help SlopeViews and for all of the unique individuals we met at the 2010 SIA Snow Show who made it into the extraordinary event that it was.

January 31st, 2010 - While at the SIA Snow Show in Denver Ricardo Baca from the Denver Post stopped by the SlopeViews booth and was blown away by our immersive video experience.  The following day, we found our promotional videos in the Denver Post as one of the “Eight Essential Gadgets” of the Snow Sports Industries America 2010 Snow Show.  “It really is the next logical step in virtual tourism, making for promotional videos that jump off the screen with brilliance and interactivity” says Ricardo.  We are glad that Ricardo shares our vision and know that people will see the use of this innovative medium as the new standard in virtual tourism.

January 22nd, 2010 - On Janary 12th at 9:53 GMT Haiti was rocked by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that devestated Port-au-Prince.  The world has been deeply saddened by this event especially since Haiti is known as the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.  Just when the country seemed to be making tremendous progress in improving the quality of life for its population tragedy struck.  As word started to come across the wires the response was swift.  When the world started to receive the images from the earthquake ravaged region the reality was setting in.  Haiti, and Port-au-Prince in particular, was in dire straits.  Not long after these images started coming to all of us around the world, inquiries were made about getting a 360° video camera down to Haiti to document the destruction and the relief efforts.  Our new field producer at SlopeViews, Thomas Hayden and myself talked late into the night on strategies on getting to Haiti with our camera, but word came that a fellow team, IMTS, another authorized Immersive Media agent, was already on its way.  IMTS has significant experience in gathering surveillance video data for military, law enforcement and security applications.  It has captured 360-degree video data in Iraq and elsewhere for advanced monitoring, protection and response. The 360-degree videos help operations teams identify risks and threats, monitor hostile environments from afar, and maximize the safety and understanding of their operations.  Immersive Media and its agents have been working with CNN in bringing this footage to the world.  Check out the CNN Haiti 360° for their coverage of the earthquake.  Even the camera crews from CNN admitted that the destruction is so vast that there is no way they can capture all of the destruction with traditional video.  “All of us at Immersive Media are terribly saddened by the events of January 12th and want to do whatever we can to help improve the immediate and long-term situation in Haiti,” said Myles McGovern, president and CEO of Immersive Media. “As previous natural disasters have shown, detailed imagery and assessments of the affected areas are critical to relief efforts and future planning.  Since many of the first responders and government organizations are not on-site in Haiti, these 360-degree videos give them an unprecedented view of the devastation from the ground level.”   The Immersive Media cameras capture 100 million pixels at 30 frames per second for high-resolution detail.  Due to the number of agencies expected to access video over low-speed connections, the video quality has been optimized for lower-bandwidth web viewing. The video can be freely embedded into other websites and also be shared via Facebook, Twitter and other social media.  High-resolution, 360-degree video footage of the destruction in Haiti is also available upon request via the Immersive Media website.  This was a combined effort from several organizations including Immersive Media and CNN and the services have been donated from all.  For more information about Immersive Media and their efforts in Haiti here is their latest press release.

January 21st, 2010 - If there is one event of the year for SlopeViews that defines the snow sports industry it is the SIA Snow Show.  SnowSports Industries America (SIA) is the national not-for-profit, North American member-owned trade association representing the snow sports industry who hosts the SIA Snow Show every year. The SIA Snow Show is heading home to the mountains for the first time ever.  Denver, Colorado will play host to the SIA Snow Show on January 28, 29, 30 and 31, 2010 at the Colorado Convention Center.  The SIA Snow Show will then be followed by the first international two day On-Snow Demo/Free Ride Fest, February 1 & 2 at Winter Park Resort and Devil's Thumb Ranch, CO.  SlopeViews is excited to be one of the official videographers of the trade show in addition to having a major presence with our exhibit space.  We are also very excited to announce our new product launch with the next generation of trail maps.  At the 2010 SIA Snow Show you will see the latest trends and innovations in style, technology and snow sports products that will define the 2010-11 winter season.  With nearly the entire snow sports industry in attendance, there isn’t a more concentrated networking opportunity in such an authentic environment.  The SIA Snow Show attracts more than 1,000 exhibitors, including 120 new participants this season and 20,000 attendees.  There’s no better place to network, socialize and connect with the rest of the snow sports industry for SlopeViews.  This industry is built on personal relationships, passion and experience that are shared by all of us and the SIA Snow Show represents this vision.  We are excited about the SIA Snow Show coming to Colorado and look forward to this great event.  Stop by our booth at #1010 to check out our new products and our immersive video production services.  See you there!!

January 13th, 2010 - We are pleased to announce that Vail Resorts in collaboration with Immersive Media has just published a press release about their very succesful 2010 marketing campaign, with immersive videos on each one of their mountain resort websites.  Each website contains immersive video footage featuring everything from ski runs, terrain parks and on-mountain amenities.  You can find the immersive video footage at the websites of Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, and Heavenly.  "Immersive Media's 360-degree videos allow us to provide our website visitors with the true experience of each mountain resort, before they actually arrive.  They can walk through our village base areas or head down a ski run.  With the 360-degree video, they can look all around, and see the full landscape. It's an amazing point of view from an online perspective.  We employ a lot of video on our sites, and feel as if the interactive videos allow us to go one step further in bringing the experience of the great outdoors to life" said Charles Townsend of Vail Resorts interactive marketing team.  Keep an eye out because there is a lot more to come!  Vail Resorts operates the top ski resorts in North American and is also the leader in providing cutting edge technology to their guests both on and off the mountain.

January 11th, 2010 - As always, the Ouray Ice Festival was a huge success.  The climbing competition was exciting and thrilling to watch as the athletes pulled off feats of incredible physical and mental endurance.  The kids climbing wall set a record for the number of kids that climbed ice for the first time.  It's great tto see kids of all ages try something that most people would never consider attempting.  The clinics offered at the Ouray Ice Festival which are booked months in advance seemed to be bustling.  The chance to learn how to climb for the first time or climb more efficiently, taught by some of the worlds best climbers and mountaineers is an opportunity not to be missed.  There was even pro climbers who were equipped with wireless microphones as they climbed some of the hardest routes in the park, giving spectators a chance to really see and hear what the climbers are thinking as they tackle problems that seemto be impossible.  The biggest event of the weekend was of course the Endless Ascent. Will Gadd pulled off the impossible and climbed 194 laps on Pic of the Vic, one of the parks longest and most sustained ice routes.  SlopeViews was proud to be a part of such an amazing event and to be there to show our support for Will as he suffered to raise money for the dZi Foundation. We want to of course give props to Will for commiting to such a tremendous undertaking and the training that went into the preparation for the event.  We also want to give a very specail thanks to the dZi Foundation, especially Joanne Kneafsey and Jim Nowak for their support of our vision and the effort they put into organizing the Endless Ascent.

December 20th, 2009 - SlopeViews is proud to announce the addition of a new team member, Thomas Hayden.  Having been introduced to 360° video in a little ski cabin in Girdwood, Alaska, Thomas Hayden brings lessons learned from five years experience specializing in 360° video production and marketing.  Thomas' entire career has been focused on providing clients with an incredible experience.  Starting as a river guide/expedition leader on the Colorado Plateau for the legendary Holiday Expeditions, he has taken thousands of clients down the magnificent rivers of Utah, Colorado, West Virginia, Mexico, and Alaska.  He ventured into entrepreneurism in the travel industry in Denali Park, Alaska, and later brought his skills to the sales and marketing team at Alyeska Resort.  It was only the opportunity to work with Google that pulled him away from ski town life.  After jump starting Immersive Video Solutions in Anchorage, Alaska, Thomas was tapped to become one of the first producers for the Google Maps Street View project.  With a daily shooting schedule and massive scale, Thomas became an expert at the intricacies of 360° video and helped build the foundations of a project that has now spanned the globe.  Before joining SlopeViews to focus on his travel industry roots, Thomas was in marketing at Immersive Media and produced a variety of projects in multiple industries.  Recently, Thomas has hit the blogging world with his 360° Video Blog, which has become the leading source of information regarding 360° video and all the latest advancements and players. Thomas also holds a degree in Biology from the University of North Texas.  SlopeViews wants to extend a warm welcome to Thomas and we look forward to having a fun, long-lasting and prosperous relationship.

December 14th, 2009 - Just recently we have seen an explosive growth in marketers trying to find new and exciting ways to engage their audiences longer.  The 360° immersive web video platform is a revolution in marketing and it is unfolding right now.  With the recent release of the new Sony Bloggie, the consumer version of a 360° video camera, the consumer is going to recognize and expect this new video technology just as what's happened with 360° still panaoramic photgraphs.  Numerous major companies have utilized this technolgy including National Geographic, Adidas and Red Bull.  Immersive Media Chief Operating Officer Karen Tanaka said videos for Adidas and Red bull were viewed by an average of five times by each viewer. "In the past, you hit click and play. With our video the interactivity and control empower the audience," Mrs. Tanaka said.  They're looking at what they want to see.  Another major development has been the live streaming of 360° video for events.  Now that the live streaming of 360° video for events has taken place, we are beginning to see the results.  Ryan Trotman, director at MuchMusic reports that during their first immersive streaming event, MuchMusic doubled its audience in the second half of the show as viewers spread links to the event via Twitter and Facebook.  The more we allow our viewers to control the show, the less likely they are to flip away," said Ryan Trotman. For more information on this article you can find it at Advertising Age.

December 09th, 2009 - The 2009 FIS Birds of Prey World Cup Races at Beaver Creek Resort was a great success!  With bluebird skies prevailing for the majority of the event, the crowds came out in full force despite the sub-zero temperatures.  The Birds of Prey gave the public an opportunity to show support for their favorite ski racers and marvel at the athletes pushing the envelope of human performance.  SlopeViews was there to capture the training day all the way to the finish on Sunday where Carlos "The Iceman" Janka ended up sweeping all three races (Super Combined, Downhill, and GS) for only the second time in history.  The last time this feat was accomplished was back in 1999 by one of ski racings icons, Herman Maier.  Bode Miller made an impressive showing with his aggressive style of skiing, coming in 1st place before getting knocked off the podium by a strong Swiss presence and reigning overall World Cup Champion Aksel Lund Svindal who came in third.  Overall, it was an excellent World Cup experience and will go down in SlopeViews history as a very memorable time.  Stay tuned for some amazing footage from the 2009 FIS Birds of Prey World Cup Races.

November 25th, 2009 - We are excited to announce our presence at the 2009 Birds of Prey World Cup Races, December 4-6th at Beaver Creek Resort, Colorado.  Anyone who pays attention to ski racing or is involved with the ski industry is very familiar with the Birds of Prey World Cup Races.  Beaver Creek's Birds of Prey race course was first built in the summer of 1997 in preparation for the 1999 World Alpine Ski Championships.  Designed by Olympic Downhill gold medalist Bernhard Russi of Switzerland, the course features a vertical drop of 757 meters and contains an average gradient of 27 percent, increasing to 45 percent in the middle of the course and again in the final third.  The course is widely recognized as one of the top three race courses in the world, and is the only venue in the United States to hold a men's World Cup Event.  It is the fourth stop of the men's Audi FIS World Cup tour and one of alpine racing's marquee events of the season.  With the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver this winter, the Birds of Prey provides the best opportunity for U.S. fans to see the U.S. Ski Team and the world's top racers before the February 12th Opening Ceremonies, making this year's Birds of Prey World Cup Races even more exciting.  Adding to this excitement is the fact that Beaver Creek and Vail are the official U.S Candidate Applicants for the FIS World Alpine Ski Championships in 2015, which will be announced on June 3rd, 2010.  With the help and leadership of the nonprofit Vail Valley Foundation, which is responsible for enhancing and sustaining the spirit of the Vail Valley through its educational, athletic, and cultural endeavors, the Birds of Prey World Cup Races is an annual treasured event.  In addition to the Vail Valley Foundation, 300+ dedicated volunteers, known as the Talon Crew, work extremely hard to prepare the course and get it in top shape for the world-wide audience.  The Talon Crew is recognized around the world as one of the most proficient, capable, and willing race course crews in the ski racing community.  The Vail Valley is proud to be home to such an enthusiastic ski culture and the Talon Crew reflects this.  We hope that by showing all the excitement, energy and revelry surrounding the Birds of Prey World Cup Races, in addition to the preparation and hard work that goes into making the Birds of Prey happen, we can do our part in helping secure the 2015 FIS World Alpine Ski Championships for the Vail Valley.

November 17th, 2009 - SlopeViews is passionate about climbing and the Ouray Ice Park is one of our favorite places to play.  The Ouray Ice Park is home to the world's premier ice climbing competition and gathering and this year the park will host the 15th Annual Ouray Ice Festival, January 7-10th, 2010.  The Festival is an international gathering of ice climbers, gear manufacturing exhibitors, and ice climbing voyeurs simply thrilled to watch at a safe distance from the precipitious edges.  The festival was first held in January of 1996 and promoted by ice climbing pioneer Jeff Lowe.  The festival is now recognized around the world as the premier international gathering of its kind.  The Festival isn't just for climbers - there are gear auctions, film and slide show presentations and even a Kids Climbing Wall away from the gorge to get the little tykes started off right.  This is one of the most unique and entertaining events in Colorado, held in one of the most beautiful places in the country.  Come on down and join SlopeViews for this special event and stay tuned for some amazing immersive video footage from the 15th Annual Ouray Ice Festival.

November 11th, 2009 - Just recently the term "immersive" has started to gain more traction as the technology evolves and is receiving serious exposure. People are scambling to try and differentiate the term virtual and immersive when referring to next-generation technologies. In an October 1st Metanomics Blog piece Robert Bloomfield hit the nail on the head.  "The term immersive media practically shouts integration and flexibility. Integration because these days the point of a medium is almost always to integrate it with other media. Flexibility because the term immersive media indicates what virtual world technology can become, rather than simply what virtual worlds are now."

November 05th, 2009 - SlopeViews is expanding our reach within the state of Colorado with the addition of a new location.  We are now located in Steamboat Springs, in addition to Summit County and the Vail Valley.  The City of Steamboat Springs is home to world-class resort skiing and powder skiing, year-round recreational opportunities, and a vibrant western culture, all surrounded by some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in the world.  Steamboat is known around the globe simply as Ski Town, U.S.A. and has produced more winter Olympians than any other town in North America, now a record 69 and counting.  We are pleased to bring this technology to Ski Town USA and look forward to working closely with the local Steamboat Springs business community.

October 23rd, 2009 - We are pleased to announce that Immersive Media has expanded their Authorized Agent program to include SlopeViews.  We have been working closely with Immersive Media in developing a winning strategy to help both companies succeed in the new emerging markets for 360° spherical video.  As the newest member of the Authorized Agent Program we are excited to bring this new technology to the forefront of the travel, tourism, entertainment and recreation markets. October 14th, 2009 - There has been an exciting development in the world of Immersive Media technology.  The integration of the technology into the top selling game for the Microsoft Xbox360, Halo 3.  Immersive Media and Microsoft's innovative advertising campaign has already received critical acclaim as well as attracted an unprecedented 288,873 visitors to the Halo 3 ODST website in the weeks following the campaigns launch.  The Immersive Media video clips appear on the Halo 3 site as videos-within-a-video, seamlessly integrated into the online environment.  The Immersive Media dynamic spherical video clips enable fans to step into the haunting world of Halo 3, giving them the unprecedented ability to become part of the action and extend the game experience.  Immersive media's patented 360° video technology lets viewers watch the video over and over again, and yet see something different each time.  It ensures the most realistic visual experience possible online, and research shows viewers typically spend up to four times longer viewing Immersive Media than traditional online videos.  As this integrated technology evolves, we can see this moving from the role-playing style games such as Halo 3 to games geared more toward skiing, snowboarding any any other action adventure sports.

October 01st, 2009 - An interesting article was just published in the award-winning Guardian, a leading news publication in the UK. It reports that for the first time the internet has overtaken television to become the biggest advertising sector in the country.  The UK is not the first country where internet ad spending has overtaken TV, with Denmark reaching the milestone about six months ago, but it is the first major economy to do so. The big news is the growing online video advertising sector outpacing all other advertising mediums on the web. The study estimated that this sector grew by close to 300% year on year, to almost £12m. The study was conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, in conjunction with the IAB U.K. and the World Advertising Research Center.
